The Ho Chi Minh city people’s court has sentenced Nguyen Giang Vu Vi, 35, to 16 years in prison for fraud and appropriation of property.
Vietnamese detectives agency, Vi was a bank employee. She previously worked with the victims at a commercial bank branch in Binh Duong province, Vietnam.
From January 2022 to August 2023, Vi told colleagues she needed money to help customers settle and renew bank loans.
She promised lenders a commission for each loan-renewal transaction. Trusting her, the victims transferred money to her several times.
The total amount transferred exceeded VND 100 billion. Vi later repaid part of the money. She was found to have appropriated nearly VND 30 billion.
Le Thi Tuyet Nhung was the biggest victim. She transferred more than VND 75 billion. Vi allegedly appropriated about VND 13.3 billion from her.
Vietnamese detectives, at the trial, Vi admitted the offense. She also asked the court for a reduced sentence.
The court said Vi’s former husband had repaid about VND 20 billion of her debts. He did not ask Vi to repay him. Therefore, the court did not consider him responsible for that amount.
The case was previously returned for further investigation into possible usurious lending. Investigators later maintained the original charges.
Because the issue was outside the scope of the trial, the court did not consider it.
The Ho Chi Minh city people’s court ultimately sentenced Vi to 16 years in prison for fraud and appropriation of property.
